About Us

What we do

Respire respiratory function laboratory is an Ipswich based respiratory physiology lab providing accurate assessment of respiratory parameters to help diagnose causes of breathlessness, magnitude of known respiratory conditions and monitoring of chronic respiratory illness.

Specific measurements include

  • Spirometry.
  • Bronchodilator response.
  • Plethysmography (static lung volumes).
  • Gas transfer.
  • Bronchoprovocation testing.

Our team

Respire respiratory function laboratories operates out of Ipswich under supervision of specialist respiratory physicians who, with the assistance of highly trained respiratory scientists, obtain accurate and reliable measurements of respiratory function data.

Spirometry is a key test to help determine if there is any defect getting air into (restriction, such as fibrosis), or out of the lungs (obstruction, such as asthma or COPD) .

Spirometry is a simple test to confirm and quantify severity of obstructive disease. Spirometry can only rule out restriction. To confirm restrictive pathology static lung volumes (body plethysmography) must be performed.

Body Plethysmography is used to confirm a restrictive disease pattern. Additionally, gas trapping or hyperinflation can be assessed in obstructive pathologies.

Gas transfer testing is a useful assessment of lung parenchymal gas exchange. DLCO testing is used to help differentiate emphysema from chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma.

Gas transfer testing is invaluable in detection of pulmonary vascular disease, dyspnea assessment and evaluating impairment from interstitial lung disease or COPD.

Guide on which test to select

Complex Lung Function

Pre and Post Bronchodilator Spirometry with Gas Transfer

Pre and Post Bronchodilator Spirometry with Gas Transfer

Complex lung function assessment (Spirometry - with or without bronchodilator, Lung Volumes, Gas transfer test)  is best for suspected COPD, Interstitial Lung Disease and dyspnea for investigation

Bronchoprovocation Test

Mannitol challenge test is best for subsequent confirmation or exclusion of bronchospasm/asthma.

Note mannitol challenge testing is pending respiratory review.
