When investigating respiratory function we use the latest technology with expert instruction to obtain accurate results for your medical care.
Accurate results are paramount to providing you with the correct diagnosis and therefore the correct medical recommendations from your practitioner.
Testing involves maximum expiratory effort and repeatable results.
Prior to testing you will be given instructions as to any changes to your medications.
Wear comfortable clothing for testing and appropriate footwear.
The testing is mostly seated but to obtain maximum results you should be comfortable.
Make sure you know what medications you take and in particular know what inhalers you use.
There are some contraindications to testing such as recent surgery, procedures and eye operations. The scientist will make sure the test is performed in a safe manner.
Prior to testing your height, weight, age, gender, ethnicity and smoking history will be recorded.
A scientist will guide you through a series of breathing patterns that measure how well air travels in and out of your lungs, the size of your lungs and how efficient your lungs are in the delivery of oxygen. To obtain these measures, the scientists will explain and demonstrate each breathing maneuver required to ensure results are obtained with accuracy.
Active and maximal participation is required for valid results.
At Respire, we bulk bill a range of lung function tests. Make sure you have a current referral and bring along your Medicare card.
These tests are NOT invasive and should NOT cause pain. However, keep in mind that the testing does require maximal effort. Therefore, you may experience transient shortness of breath, chest discomfort, coughing, lightheadedness, or headaches during the testing procedure. Our team of scientists will try to best maintain your comfort throughout the testing procedure and the test can be terminated at your instruction.
Even patients with severe lung disease can be tested. Our scientists are highly experienced and will ensure you have adequate recovery periods in between your tests.
Although oxygen cannot be used during the testing procedure, you should bring your oxygen tank as required to transport to and from your appointment as needed.
If you have any symptoms of active or suspected transmissible respiratory or systemic infection you should alert staff prior to your arrival so we can reschedule your test. A health screening process will be conducted to ensure patient and staff safety.
To achieve accurate results it is important to not rush through the testing procedure. As a general guide, the test will take approximately 30-40 minutes.
